چکیده
As a cultural phenomenon, graffiti is created with a variety of intentions and purposes. Researchers have addressed different modes of graffiti to capture modality variation in L1 and L2 graffiti. In the same manner, the present mixed-method study was carried out to identify different themes in 120 pieces of written graffiti, to determine the language functions of graffiti, written and pictorial, collected randomly from two English and two Persian communities. Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis along with Zandi’s (2014) classification were applied to identify the themes of graffiti and the relevant categories. Further, Jakobson’s (1960) theory was used to analyze the language functions of graffiti. The comparison of the data revealed similar themes and subthemes for both English and Persian graffiti. However, the frequency of the subthemes and their ways of application indicated some distinctions between the graffiti. The findings underscore the importance of applying graffiti in EFL contexts.
