| Aim: Glutamine is a non-essential amino acid, but its demand increases under metabolic stress. Research on its effects on anaerobic performance is limited and inconclusive. This study investigated the effects of 4 weeks of glutamine supplementation on anaerobic performance and blood lactate levels in elite male rowing. Method: Twenty-four elite male rowers participated as subjects in the present study. The research is of a quasi-experimental and applied type, conducted using a pre-test-post-test design with a placebo group, in a double-blind manner. Subjects were randomly assigned to two groups supplement (n=12) and placebo (n=12) group. The supplement group received 0.1 g/kg/day of glutamine and the placebo group received, both 30 minutes before each daily training session (6 days per week) for 4 weeks. Peak power, mean power, and fatigue index were measured using the Wingate anaerobic test before and after the supplementation period. Blood lactate levels were assessed at four time points (before and after Wingate). Data were analyzed using paired t-tests, ANCOVA and repeated measures ANOVA (p≤0.05). Results: Glutamine supplementation significantly increased peak power (p=0.001) and mean power (p=0.001) in the supplement group compared to the placebo. However, it had no significant effect on fatigue index (p=0.06). Furthermore, no significant decrease in blood lactate levels was observed post-Wingate in the glutamine group (p=0.45). Conclusion: Although the chronic intake of glutamine did not affect the fatigue index and blood lactate concentration, it may be considered a potentially effective strategy for enhancing anaerobic performance in elite male rowers. Keywords: Dietary supplement, Fatigue, Amino acids, Phosphocreatine | ||
