| Aim: Water polo is a metabolically demanding sport requiring athletes to sustain repeated bouts of high-intensity effort. The accumulation of lactate and subsequent acidosis are key limiting factors of performance. Therefore, ingestion of alkalinizing agents such as sodium bicarbonate may enhance the body’s buffering capacity, attenuate fatigue, and improve performance. This study aimed to investigate the Acute Effect of Sodium Bicarbonate Ingestion Before Anaerobic Swimming Activity on Physiological and Performance Indices in Water Polo Players. Method: : In this double-blind, crossover experimental study, nine male premier league water polo players completed swimming, dribbling, and shooting protocols under three conditions—control, placebo (dextrose), and sodium bicarbonate ingestion—each separated by six days. Heart rate, rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and performance outcomes were assessed to evaluate the influence of sodium bicarbonate. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA with a significance level set at p<0.05. Results: Repeated measures ANOVA with Bonferroni post hoc analysis revealed significant increases in heart rate following swimming and shooting in all conditions. However, only post-swim heart rate in the sodium bicarbonate condition differed significantly from placebo (p<0.05). No significant differences were observed in RPE (p=0.12) or ball throwing velocity (p=0.43) between trials, whereas shooting accuracy showed a significant difference across conditions (p=0.048). Conclusion: Acute sodium bicarbonate supplementation appears to partially enhance buffering capacity, contributing to improved physiological responses and skill accuracy during anaerobic water polo activities. Nevertheless, larger-scale studies are warranted to confirm these findings and clarify underlying mechanisms. | ||
