| چکیده | ||
| Miral al-Tahawy’s Brooklyn Heights provides a profound feminist examination of the intricate struggles encountered by immigrant women as they navigate cultural, social, and political obstacles. Fastened on Hend, a single mother who leaves her restrictive Bedouin life in Egypt to settle in Brooklyn, the novel explores themes of violence and gender oppression while illustrating the broader realities of contemporary society. By analysing the novel through Patricia Hill Collins’s Matrix of Domination, this article demonstrates the rich complexity of race, gender, class, and immigration status in shaping the main protagonist’s life, Hend, in a diasporic context. Utilising the Matrix of Domination as a framework, this paper finds that Brooklyn Heights elucidates how the structural, disciplinary, hegemonic, and interpersonal domains of power intersect to influence the experiences of Egyptian women as they assimilate to life in America. By foregrounding tensions between cultural inheritance and assimilative pressures, this study shows how Al-Tahawy critiques not only the oppressive structures of Hend’s own homeland traditions but also the dehumanising traits of Western consumer culture, offering multifaceted ways to understand authority that encompass economic as well as emotional and social dominance. | ||
