| The present article examines Wyndham Lewis’s evolving engagement with Futurism and the formulation of Vorticism in the two issues of the avant-garde magazine BLAST, published in June 1914 and July 1915, respectively. Rather than presenting BLAST 1 and BLAST 2 as evidence of a chronological transition from Futurism to Vorticism, the paper argues that BLAST 1 already establishes Vorticism as a distinct artistic movement while revealing its complex engagement with Futurist aesthetics. Through a comparative analysis of the two issues, the paper traces how Lewis appropriated elements associated with Futuris, including dynamism, mechanization, and urban modernity, while reformulating them through the Vorticist concept of the “vortex.” BLAST 1 articulates Vorticist principles through its manifestos, visual design, and literary contributions, while also distinguishing the movement from Italian Futurism. BLAST 2, published during the First World War, further develops and modifies Lewis’s position, reflecting changing conceptions of modernity and artistic autonomy. The paper therefore argues that Lewis’s trajectory across BLAST 1 and BLAST 2 should be understood not as a straightforward movement from Futurism to Vorticism, but as a process of appropriation, differentiation, and theoretical elaboration through which he established Vorticism as a distinctive form of British modernist aesthetics. | ||
