| Aims: Aging is associated with increased chronic inflammation and oxidative stress in immune tissues. Physical exercise and bioactive compounds such as capsaicin can modulate these disturbances. This study investigated the effects of combined swimming training (interval–aerobic) along with capsaicin supplementation on inflammatory and oxidative markers in the splenic tissue of aged rats. Methods: In this experimental study, 32 aged male Wistar rats (18–20 months old) were randomly assigned to four groups: control, capsaicin, swimming training, and swimming training + capsaicin. The protocol consisted of swimming five days per week and daily capsaicin administration for 10 weeks. Subsequently, interleukin 6 (IL-6), total oxidant status (TOS), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were measured in the splenic tissue. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s post hoc test (p<0.05). Results: Capsaicin, combined training, and their combination significantly decreased IL-6 and TOS and increased TAC compared to the control group (p<0.01). Moreover, the improvements in IL-6 and TAC in the combined group (training + capsaicin) were significantly greater than those in the single-intervention groups (p<0.01). Conclusions: The results showed that combined swimming training and capsaicin intake each independently improved the inflammatory and oxidative status of the spleen in aged rats; however, their combination produced a stronger synergistic effect. Therefore, the concurrent use of exercise training and capsaicin may represent an effective strategy for enhancing immune function and reducing inflammation during aging. | ||
