| Aim: Appetite regulation and energy balance are controlled through complex interactions between the nervous and endocrine systems, and exercise can modulate these processes. Circular resistance training (CRT), particularly at high intensity, induces substantial metabolic stress and lactate accumulation, which may influence appetite-regulating hormones. This study compared the acute effects of two CRT protocols with different intensities on blood lactate, acylated ghrelin, appetite, and energy intake in young trained men. Methods: Eleven young trained men (27.18 ± 3.03 years) participated in this semi-experimental crossover study. Participants completed three conditions: (1) low-intensity CRT (LI-CRT; three circuits at 50% of one-repetition maximum [1RM]), (2) high-intensity CRT (HI-CRT; two circuits consisting of sets at 50% and 25% of 1RM performed to volitional failure), and (3) a non-exercise control condition. Blood samples were collected before, immediately after, and 60 min after each session to determine blood lactate and acylated ghrelin concentrations. Subjective appetite was assessed using a visual analogue scale, and energy intake was measured with an ad libitum meal. Data were analyzed using repeated-measures ANOVA with Bonferroni post hoc tests (P ≤ 0.05). Results: Both exercise protocols significantly increased blood lactate concentrations compared with baseline and the control condition (P < 0.001). Acylated ghrelin concentrations showed a significant time × group interaction (P = 0.018). Lactate accumulation was significantly higher in both exercise protocols compared with control (P < 0.001). Subjective hunger decreased significantly after both exercise protocols (P < 0.05), whereas no significant differences were observed between protocols in subjective appetite or energy intake (P > 0.05). Conclusions: CRT, particularly at high intensity, transiently suppresses appetite despite increasing circulating acylated ghrelin. This paradoxical response may be mediated by elevated lactate and exercise-induced metabolic signals that enhance central satiety pathways. High-intensity CRT may therefore be an effective strategy for short-term appetite regulation. | ||
