| Aim: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is one of the most common metabolic disorders worldwide and is associated with multiple metabolic complications. Exercise training and herbal supplementation have been considered complementary approaches for the management of this condition. The propose if this study investigated the effect of 10 weeks of TRX training combined with chamomile extract consumption on serum TGF-β and LCN13 levels in women with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, 40 women with type 2 diabetes mellitus were selected and randomly assigned to four groups: TRX training plus placebo (n=10), chamomile supplementation (n=10), TRX plus chamomile supplementation (n=10) and control (n=10). The TRX groups performed a 10-week training program consisting of three sessions per week with exercise intensity progressing from 13 to 17 on the Borg rating of perceived exertion scale. The chamomile groups consumed three capsules containing 500 mg of dried chamomile extract after the three main meals for 10 weeks, whereas the placebo group received capsules containing 500 mg of corn starch. Blood samples were collected to assess serum LCN13 and TGF-β1. Data were analyzed using two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance and Tukey's post hoc test in SPSS version 27 at a significance level of p≤0.05. Results: The results were showed significant time×exercise, time×supplementation and time×exercise×supplementation interactions for serum TGF-β (p=0.001, p=0.002, and p=0.001, respectively). Tukey's post hoc test showed significant differences in TGF-β changes between the exercise and control groups, supplementation and control groups, and combined and control groups (p≤0.05). For LCN13, the time×exercise interaction was significant (p=0.006), whereas the time×supplementation and time×exercise×supplementation interactions were not significant (p=0.083 and p=0.216, respectively). Significant differences in LCN13 changes were observed between the supplementation and control groups, combined and control groups, combined and exercise groups, and combined and supplementation groups (p≤0.05). Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study, it appears that combining TRX exercises with chamomile supplementation can be effective in improving serum TGF-β1 levels in diabetic patients; however, the combined effect on LCN13 is insufficient, indicating a need for further studies to obtain precise and generalizable results. | ||
