| This study investigates the relationship between L2 language quality and the dimensions of lexical diversity and syntactic complexity across both speaking and writing. While previous research has focused predominantly on writing, this study explores how these predictors contribute to the quality of both modes. Fifty-one EFL learners participated by completing narrative essays and narrative interviews. Multiple regression analyses identified two complexity indices—complex nominals per clause and dependent clauses per T-unit—as strong predictors of L2 writing quality. For speaking, verb phrases per T-unit, mean length of sentence, and lexical diversity were significant predictors. Furthermore, Pearson correlation analyses revealed significant relationships between overall quality, lexical diversity, and six syntactic complexity indices across both modes, excluding coordinate phrases per T-unit. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that the predictors of language quality differ across speaking and writing and emphasize the necessity of integrating both syntactic and lexical dimensions into L2 instruction to foster learners’ oral and written communicative proficiency. | ||
