| چکیده | ||
| This article examines the adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Othello in pre-revolutionary Iranian cinema, with a focus on Uprising (Shuresh) directed by Reza Mirlohi in 1973 and Maghrebi directed by Reza Fazeli in 1973. While Shakespeare’s tragedies were rarely adapted in Iran before 1979, partly due to political anxieties around themes of regicide, Othello found remarkable resonance. Its central motifs of jealousy, honour, and suspicion aligned closely with a gendered discourse of male honour represented in filmfarsi and debated within Iranian social life. Drawing on adaptation theory and feminist criticism, particularly the work of Marianne Novy, the article argues that these two films reframe Othello in ways that reflect the political and socio-cultural context of Pahlavi Iran. Uprising offers a veiled critique of authoritarian power, while Maghrebi foregrounds cultural anxieties around masculinity and honour. In both cases, however, female characters remain confined within patriarchal constructions, revealing the gendered limits of cinematic Shakespeare in Iran. The study enriches our understanding of adaptation as a dynamic process and demonstrates the enduring appeal of Shakespeare’s tragedies in diverse cinematic contexts in general, and filmfarsi in particular. | ||
